Just months after New Yorkerslamented the loss of Regal Union Square, the company announced a deal to keep the movie theater open after all.Regal last week saidit had signed a new long-term lease with Related Companies to continue the operation ofitstheaterat Broadway and 13th Street for “many years to come.” In January, the country’s second-largest movie theater planned to close 39 locations, including Regal Union Square, as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings,asEV Grievereported.
AUnion Square staple since 1998, the theater had undergone a multi-million dollar enhancement in 2020, completedright before the start of the pandemic. The theater received a new lobby, bar, leather seats, and the Pepsi 4DX auditorium, whichadded special effects like motion-synchronized seats, wind, fog, rain lightning, snow, bubbles, vibrations, and scents, according to EV Grieve.
“Regal Union Square is a state-of-the-art theatre featuring the latest advancements to the moviegoing experience,” Mooky Greidinger, CEO of Cineworld, the parent company of Regal, said in an official statement.
“In cooperation with our partners at Related, we are excited to enter into a long-term lease agreement for this premiere entertainment destination providing moviegoers from the area the best place to watch a movie for many years to come.”
In January, Regal Cinemas announced it would close 39 U.S. locations after its parent company Cineworld filed for bankruptcy, according to Variety. The decisionto file for bankruptcy came after the company experienced a staggering decline in box office sales during the pandemic and monthly rents increased by roughly 30 percent from 2019 to 2022.
“We are thrilled to continue our long-term relationship with Regal in the heart of Union Square,” Chad Jones, senior vice president at Related, said. “The best-in-class cinema experience will continue to bring the magic of the movies to thousands of Manhattan residents as well as visitors from around the world.”

Union Square’s cherished dinnerware store Fishs Eddy speaks out about COVID struggles

"We’re like a fish gasping for air — literally," said Julie Gaines, the owner ofFishs Eddy, to the New York Post. The much-loved Union Square store has been in business since 1986,selling mix-and-match, reasonably priced dinnerware that includes NYC-themed items and quirky finds like Obama shot glasses and parking ticket plates. Since the pandemic hit, however, they've only been doing 30 percent of their usual business, much of which is based on tourists, which is making it harder and harder to afford their high rent.

Target signs lease for Food Emporium space on Union Square East

Don't get too excited yet--it's not opening untilat least 2023, when the lease expires for the space's current tenant, the Food Emporium grocery store. The Post reports that Target signed a lease for the 32,579-square-foot space at the base of 10 Union Square East. Target currently has seven stores in Manhattan, with two more set to open in Times Square,Columbus Circle, and Washinton Heights. One of their stores is just a few avenues east on 14th Street at Avenue A.

Manhattan’s public squares may not actually be square, but they matter

Built to emulate Great Britain's enviable squares, which were actually square, Manhattan's public squares were created in the celebrated New York City tradition of being whatever they pleased–and definitely not square. According to the New York Daily News, Manhattan doesn't have any actual squares at all: Lisa Keller, executive editor of the Encyclopedia of New York City, said "Americans just call it a square if it's bigger than a breadbox." The MTA considers a ‘car-free busway’ as L-train alternative

L train via Wiki CommonsTo mitigate the nightmare commuters will face during the 15-month L-train shutdown, the MTA and the Department of Transportation presented four possible alternatives that would make a portion of 14th Street a car-free busway. Streetsblog NYC reported that during a Manhattan Community Board 6 meeting on Monday, the agencies laid out the following options: a standard Select Bus Service (SBS) along 14th Street, enhanced SBS that includes turn and curb restrictions, a car-free busway in the middle lanes along 14th and a river-to-river car-free busway. Agency officials predict between 75 and 85 percent of the daily 275,000 daily L riders will use other subway lines, with bus service possibly absorbing between 5-15 percent of displaced trips.

Contest winners suggest a car-free 14th Street with shuttles and bike lanes during L train shutdown

Advocacy group Transportation Alternatives has been trying to stay focused on grounded solutions–literally, as opposed to the tunnel and skyway ideas that are also being discussed–to mitigate the anticipated possible chaos when the dreaded 15-month L train shutdown hits. The organization is aiming for the ear of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the MTA which control street design and bus expansion, respectively. The group recently held an "L-ternative" contest seeking pedestrian-centered proposals for main transit corridors along the L line, such as 14th street, Gothamist reports.The winning proposal, called 14TH ST.OPS, imaginesa (car) traffic-free 14th Street with a six-stop shuttle bus using dedicated lanes, plus protected bike lanes.

Colorful street mural depicts the vibrancy of Union Square

After five days, 100 volunteers, and 85 gallons of paint, a new mural on 14th Street is now complete. The Union Square Partnership this week unveiled "Flowing Together," a colorful 7,500-square-foot mural on the pedestrian areas of the 14th Street Busway, between Broadway and University Place. Designed by Queens-based artist Talisa Almonte, the bold street art reflects Union Square as a spot to pass through and historically, a place rooted in social movements.

Ladies’ Mile condo designed by DXA features a draping fabric-like facade

The design of a new 17-story condominium in the Ladies' Mile Historic District celebrates the history of the neighborhood and the spirit of innovation in New York City. Designed by DXA Studio, 10 West 17th Street features a facade of ultra-high-performance concrete molded to look like flowing fabric, a nod to the neighborhood's role in the garment industry and as a major shopping destination during the Gilded Age. The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday voted to approve the unique design.

Sewer alligator sculpture in Union Square channels century-old New York City myth

A new sculpture in Union Square Park plays on the century-old myth that alligators live in New York City's sewer system. Created by Swedish artist Alexander Klingspor in collaboration with Mollbrinks Gallery, "NYC Legend" is a bronze sculpture depicting a life-sized alligator sitting atop a manhole cover. The artwork is inspired by an urban legend that originated 100 years ago claiming New Yorkers set pet baby alligators loose in the sewers after they grew too large to handle. The installation is on display through June 2024.

Pedestrian, public space upgrades slated for Broadway near Union Square

New York City wants to better connect the Flatiron District and Union Square. As part of an expansion of the city's "Broadway Vision" plan, Mayor Eric Adams on Monday announced plans to upgrade public space on Broadway from East 21st Street to East 17th Street, including bike lanes, pedestrian space, and expanded outdoor dining. The Department of Transportation will launch public outreach for the expansion this week, gathering feedback on the improvements, specifically, a new two-way bike boulevard.

New mural on 14th Street in Union Square celebrates human connection to nature

A new street mural along the 14th Street Busway in Union Square celebrates the intricate connection between humans and nature. Designed by Brooklyn-based artist Vanesa Álvarez, "Union with the Universe"uses serene designs and shades of color, invitingobservers to slow down and take a moment toconnect with the world around them. Unveiled on Wednesday, the mural was installed over a period of five days with the help of Street Plans, a Brooklyn-based urban planning and design firm, and other community groups.
